A Dental Lab is one of the many occupational healthcare occupations that use dental laboratory technology. Dental lab technicians usually follow a direct order from a dentist when creating these items, including prosthetic appliances (dentures and implants) as well as other therapeutic medical devices. These items are used by lab technicians in dental care settings to provide diagnostic and treatment services to patients. Products such as x-rays, calculators and computerized instruments are created, manufactured, and repaired in dental laboratories. In some cases, lab equipment is used to treat patients in dental offices or laboratory care facilities.
Dental lab technology can be used in dental laboratories, dental offices and dental care facilities. These devices create, test and repair dental products for patients in need. Some items created in these laboratories include x-ray machines, laboratory computers and diagnostic medical devices. Many laboratories also produce sterilizers, pain-gaining medicines and other medical items.
Dental labs create dental restorations that can be used to replace teeth in patients who cannot otherwise replace them on their own. For example, a patient might have missing teeth due to accidents or some disease. Such patients may be able to have prosthetics created to mimic their lost teeth. Alternatively, dental laboratory technology can make permanent artificial teeth. This is known as dental restoration.
Dental laboratory professionals belong to a professional organization known as the National Academy of Medical Device Manufacturers or the NASEM. The NASEM publishes a highly regarded magazine, available to members. Its website features articles written by members about new products, technologies and methods of using medical devices. It also features articles written by professionals in the field of dental laboratories. The website offers a newsletter, and a national forum for dental laboratories and the people involved in the field.
Another division of the lab is the forensic lab. A dental laboratory that creates restorations for the forensic science community includes dental hygienists, dentists, forensic technicians and crowns examiners. Forensic technicians test bite marks, hair, fibers, nails, clothing and other objects for DNA and other evidence. Crowns examiners look for foreign bodies embedded in crowns or other devices and restore them.
Some dental laboratories work closely with police departments in the process of creating restorations. This often involves recovering seized criminal weapons, such as firearms and knives. Forensic scientists test dental restorations using a variety of methods including carbon dating, scratches, scars and bite marks.
Some dental laboratories specialize in only one particular field. For example, an engineering laboratory may make dental restorations of bridges. Bridges are constructed from tooth-colored materials like enamel and gum tissue to mimic real teeth. Since these products are customized, they are not available at all retailers and must be specially ordered from an engineering lab. Specialty restorations can also be created for dentures, bridges, crowns and veneers.
Dental restorations are important to many aspects of life. We have all seen the beautiful crowns that have been used to crown a child's head. From simple metal crowns that cover up an old scar or scratch to the more complicated ceramic and glass crowns, restorations have provided patients with an alternative to standard ceramic and glass crowns. They provide more beauty, more function and less cost. Whether they are used to decorate teeth or to preserve them for posterity, dental laboratory products are indispensable.
The National Association of Medical Technologists (NAMT) offers several standards for dental laboratories. These include the Accreditation of Dental Labs (DAL), which accredits laboratories based on the guidelines set forth by NAMT. The American Dental Association is the largest trade organization of dental professionals in the United States. In addition to the Dental Accreditation Commission for Programs in Dental Surgery (DAPDS) and the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB), the ADA offers Dental Quality Improvement Programs (DQIP), which instruct dental technicians and other professionals on quality improvement, cost reduction and new methods of service delivery.
Most dental laboratories do not specialize in the field of prosthetics or crowns. However, most lab technicians understand how to perform all of these services and have certificates of completion from accredited programs. There are no national or state laws that regulate dental laboratories, although some local governments limit the type of equipment they can use.
Dental laboratory products are designed to provide patients with the best possible care. With the variety of dental laboratory products that are available today, there is bound to be a product that will meet your needs. Dental laboratory professionals should work closely with their patients in order to find the product that will best meet their needs.
